“yc” - the debut album from the Copenhagen-based experimental art rock quintet Young Couple - is the culmination of years of close friendship, experimentation and musical exploration, combining warm, organic playing with layers of processing and effects. Crystalline guitar figures, dubby basslines, hypnotic loops, inventive textures, and vocals that remain intimate yet slightly detached hold the pieces together. The record situates itself within the lineage of shoegaze, post-rock and experimental pop, while quietly unraveling the edges of those categories: the dreamlike indie rock of "Close to you "and "As the leaves unfold"; the shoegazed ambient pop of "Isn’t anything"; the autotune-heavy vocals of "Dawn"; the free improv/noise climax of "A light was moving!"; the electronic abrasion of "Everything" - and, threaded throughout, Jens Brøndum’s ethereal saxophone, drifting over basslines that keep shifting and pushing forward, with rhythmic structures sometimes leaning towards electronic territory. As a whole, “yc” carries a nocturnal, urban atmosphere, thriving on contrast, texture and space - music for headphones, for late nights, for newfound lovers and old friends. It is a richly layered, detailed and adventurous vision of what Danish contemporary rock might sound like in 2025.

Written over a period of five years - using phone recordings, reamping, and a wide range of inspirations - the songs on “yc” form a collage of a collective, patient, and exploratory approach to a rock record in 2025. Singer, lyricist, and second guitarist Jonas Tøibner grew up in Odense - a city with a surprisingly strong history in dream pop and shoegaze (Manual, Limp, Dorias Barraca, My Thai is Kapow), and from the label’s humble perspective, Young Couple seem to carry traces of a distinctly “Odense” sensibility: nocturnal, melancholic, expansive, and full of yearning. Since the release of their debut EP, which was covered in both Danish and international media, the group has focused on completing this debut full-length album - an work that recalls contemporary experimental rock outfits such as Spirit of the Beehive, Collider, Bar Italia, and Black Country, New Road. With the addition of guitarist Eigil Fauerskov, the band has for some time been experimenting with new directions and forms of expression. The result is a vibrant, elastic and sensitive record that moves widely across styles without ever losing its shared foundation.
