Released within five month after "Folklore", Swift has described "Evermore" as a sister album to the predecessor... The Times Raisa Bruner wrote that "Folklore is a muted, autumnal palette of sounds and feelings, while Evermore is its winter companion with lingering sadness and regret... narratives and character studies with the central axis being personal struggles, murder and revenge, aching and often hopeless releations shipes filled with jalousy. loss and faithlessness... you know all the good stuff from the vast folk and country hinterland. "Evermore" is musically a step further away from mainstream pop exandingthe acoustic core and embrasing a more sonic tone... alt-rock and indie folk often with a country or chamber emphasis... often more stripped down, overall with a more loose indie folk leaning. 

"Evermore" is mostly co-written with and produced by The National co-leader and Big Red Machines member Aaron Dessner and recorded with HAIM sisters Danielle and Este - featuring the duets "Coney Island" sung with Matt Berninger of The National, and "Evermore" with Justin Vernon of Bon Iver.
