The first single for the album "Back on the Chain Gang/My City Was Gone" was recorded with Rockpile guitarist Billy Bremner and Big Country's Tony Butler on bass. Bremner stayed and "Thin Line Between Love and Hate" was recorded adding Graham Parker Band bass player Andrew Bodnar, and Paul Carrack from Squeeze and Roxy Music on piano. The rest of the album was recorded with Robbie McIntosh on guitar and Malcolm Foster on bass.
'Learning To Crawl' spawned six singles: "Back on the Chain Gang", "Middle of the Road", "Time the Avenger", "2000 Miles", "Thumbelina" & "Thin Line Between Love and Hate" - the Persuaders cover version "2000 Miles" was issued in both 1983 and 1984 with altogether different flipsides.
The Village Voice reviwer Robert Christgau dispenced 'Learning To Crawl' a rare 'A-' grade in his "Christgau's Consumer Guide at the time - and AllMusics Mark Deming wrote that the ambum displayed a '... striking mixture of courage, strength, and great rock & roll' and that it "... with the exception of the instant-classic debut album, it's the Pretenders' finest work." Deming labelled the album a 'masterpiece'.
